I opened it soon after finishing my master's degree and awaiting for a good job opportunity to appear within the United States. I was specialized on running psychological treatments to the local jail inmates, in order to help them reconsider their lives and to deal with their time inside prison. However, and since my clinic evolved good, this opportunity didn't happened until 2019, when, and thanks to a former professor I had the chance to work, also managing my own clinic, for the Berkeley Mental Health and Wellness Service, providing psychological support to students living abroad and to families of students that had also to leave home to begin or continue their degrees.
IV. MOTIVATIONAL LETTER
- 4.1 Please explain why you have decided to apply for this vacancy.
My vocation for the psychology started early in my life. I used to be such a strong-minded girl, than later on evolved on a strong-minded focused teenager. And was then when, obviously not being hundred per cent conscious, I started acting vocationally as a psychologist with my best friend. He was such a great basketball player, and had all the necessary to success, but as happens often studying wasn't either his best ability or even something he was interested on. On top of that, his family never dedicated him the attention that a problematic teenager would require: his family had gipsy origins, and despite I never knew which was his parents' occupation, I know for sure that they weren't hard workers at all. I tried my best to give that young little crazy kid a good future, embracing the fact he was such a great basketball player to try to motivate him to put a harder effort on the school, to try obtaining a sports scholarship that could have led him to the University and to a better tomorrow over all. The intention was great but the result was awful: he ended up jailed, just a couple of years after I started the High School.
This sad fact in my life was the fuel that moved me to keep the effort on. I finished the High School within the 5 legal years that the Spanish educational system contemplates. And immediately after I looked for one of the most recognized universities all over the world within the field of the psychology. I choose Berkeley to study a master's degree specialized in criminal psychology, always with the aim of being able to help anyone else on my friend's situation on the one hand, but being honest, also because I was feeling somehow guilty for what happened to my friend. I know, at least today, that I did all in my hands to avoid such a horrible ending to happen. But I also know for sure that if 15 years before, I had had the knowledge that I have today, the experience that I host today, the capacities that I'm owner of now; my friend would not have ended up jailed and possibly now he would be such a successful person. Maybe a sportsman. Who knows.
I know it is too late to help my friend but is never too late to help others. Is never too late to help anyone who for whichever reason took a bad decision punctually and that led him or her to a situation which is still redirectable, or even better, to help them to not commit the same mistakes. This is what I attempt with all and the best of my intentions to do when I'm in therapy with a patient, usually criminals because of the specialization that I choose back in my university days. I'm still not hundred per cent sure how successful am I as a psychologist but I certainly know that thanks to people like us, we are building a better tomorrow, by taking care of behavioral disorders, treating depressions or helping to redirect lives that one day for some reason got deviated from their ideal course.
