I have always wanted two things from life. One is to live in the US; that dream was achieved thanks to my own efforts learning English and the invaluable help of my parents. The other is to work in medicine. I have always looked up to my mother, who spent 40 years as an RN across clinics and hospitals in my hometown of Hiyoshi. She would often return home late, work mind-boggling hours, at time seem stressed and out of sorts. But if I asked after her health or told her to slow down, she would always respond the same way: "I would happily shorten my life if it means saving the lives of others." This struck a chord with me since I was young; the idea that those in the medical profession aren't just providing a service in exchange for money. They are physically draining themselves, such that others may live longer, happier lives. That is a level of sacrifice I admire and wish to take on myself.

Ellie moved to the US to improve her English, following in the footsteps of her goofy older brother, Joe. Ellie, however, was always more determined, and made the move much earlier than her brother, having now lived in the US for over 8 years. Her mother was an RN for 40 years and her father was a regular salaryman. She watched both chip away at their physical and mental health through work, but saw her father's exchange was for a small salary and big bonuses for his bosses; whereas her mother's sacrifice was saving lives and helping the community. This is the base of her inspiration to chase both of her dreams, coming from her brother and her mother -- live in the US and work in medicine. She wants to start as a nurse, just like her mother, but is very open to developing and following new opportunities within the medical field.
